Major League Baseball selected TEC as General Contractor to build its Youth Academy, a permanent facility located in Compton, California. The purpose of the Academy will be to cultivate the talents of young minorities on and off the baseball field by providing year-round baseball and academic instruction.
The first of its kind, the baseball academy and youth center is owned and operated by Major League Baseball. The facilities are to be constructed on the campus of Compton Community College. The project includes a high-profile show baseball field built to minor league ballpark specifications complete with stadium lighting, seating and press box; full size practice baseball field; softball field; and, youth-size baseball field. The site will also include an entry esplanade, 10,000 square foot clubhouse with lockers and administrative offices, maintenance facility, and separate batting cages and pitching mounds. The project will be constructed on 25 to 30 acres of land and the three fields will require approximately 13 to 14 acres for development.
Major League Baseball has committed substantial financing to the development of the Urban Youth Initiative and will seek a partnership with local governments that would provide significant operating concessions.
The Youth Academy will have full-time coaching staff that will include some of the MLB’s greatest resources – former Major League and Minor League players, managers and coaches. Guest instructors will be used for practical study.
Other general contracting responsibilities include:
